There is an understandable, and laudable, push to reduce carbon emissions. The dangerous part is the mad rush to radically reduce fossil fuel consumption, in significant part by intentionally driving up the price of fossil fuel energy at pumps, thermostats and with transportation. All while ignoring nuclear power; carbon free energy that is available 24/7, sunshine or no, wind or no.
All of the other major tech transitions in our history have been effectively and efficiently driven by the market, driven by what people want. When we made the historic transition from horses to engines, the free market drove that change quickly and efficiently. The government did not step in and artificially raise the price of horse feed the way it is doing with gas. Nor did it subsidize the making or selling of “horseless carriages” with taxpayer money in the way that the feds and states are subsidizing both EVs and charging stations. And the equally historic transition from things like adding machines, typewriters and paper maps to computers was also done quickly and efficiently without the government usings its power and our money to speed things up–and screw things up along the way. But the government is all over the energy transition. Taking our energy money, giving part of it back. The government taketh, the government giveth away.
Same ugly process is unfolding with the soaring cost of college. First our government drives up the cost of college with endless school loan funding–no recourse to the college if the student defaults–then it gives some of the money back by allowing certain students to walk away from their commitments. Endless sources of funding are allowing–encouraging–colleges to add administrative staff left and right, well mostly left, and to compete for the money that comes with students by making the learning experience almost luxurious. Certainly compared to decades in the past when dorms were spare at best, the most the cafeteria had to offer was mystery meat and variously named, mostly unknown, desserts. And no coffee, certainly no Starbucks.
Those who did not default on their loans got the short end. You know, the parents and students who saved and paid cash money for their inflated-cost educations. And the responsible borrowers who kept their word and paid back their loans are also getting the short end as they see other borrowers have some or all of their loans forgiven. Why is our government rewarding those who don’t save, and those who don’t pay back what they borrow?
And what about forgiving loans for entrepreneurs? If the government is willing to forgive student loans, why not forgive a loan of an equal amount that is used to build a business? Surely a successful welding or electrical business is as least as valuable to the community as another Bachelor’s degree. The bottom line here is once again the government is taking away from us by driving up the cost of college, then paying back part of that inflated cost with our dollars. The government taketh, the government giveth away.
Perhaps the worst example is the death, the taking away, of merit-based achievement and awards. Almost everywhere it can, government is working to take away the reasons and awards for ambition and hard work, and give back affirmative action and other freebies. In an increasing number of schools, testing is no longer considered as part of the admissions process. Seems that to some folks success in testing is racist. And honoring academic success in getting good grades is being similarly cast aside as racist. More schools are picking up on the new fashion of not recognizing valedictorians and salutatorians because, once again, achievement is racist.
In the workplace, race and gender are replacing performance in hiring and promotions. Affirmative action is replacing achievement. The government is working to take away rewards for hard work and achievement, giving back identity based handouts. The government taketh, the government giveth away.
The irony, the cruel irony, is that there would be very little for the government to give away in the first place if it weren’t for:
1. The market based achievements, transitions and other enormous successes that created the world’s most successful economy.
2. Excellent, cost effective higher education, and
3. The merit-based successes that have driven everything good that we have.
